Learning math through coding
Math & the Human Mind
Ever since the dawn of civilization, humans have had the need to compute—marketplace, building the pyramids and the water system, calculating the cost of war. We live in a very exciting time in that human’s ability to compute grew exponentially powerful in the last half-decade or so with the advent of the digital computer. Humans are naturally computing machines, so what does the invention of the digital computer teach us about us humans as a computer? How does that tell us about our mathematics learning ability? In this summer program, we explore the question above through a series of basic math questions and coding them in Python. You will walk home with an understanding of how you can maximize your math learning as you navigate yourself through school!
Prerequisites: Basic arithmetic and knowing how to use the English dictionary (bring one along).
Day 1
Setting Up. Turing Machines
Identifying palindrome without a machine
Day 2
Max, Min, Finite Sets, Infinite Sets
Identifying max or min using Python
Day 3
Ordering. Why are alphabetical languages cool?
Building an ordering machine
Day 4
Sample statistics
Distribution of sample means and population mean
Day 5
Back to basics
Do you need to understand math to add, subtract, multiply, and divide?
Stay tuned for Part 2, it’s math and music!
